ARCHITECTURE, GOTHIC ART

Your visit begins with a historical introduction to the construction of the Basilica-Cathedral. Your private guide will shed light on the remarkable events that shaped this monument. The very first masterpiece of Gothic art, originally a church of a powerful abbey and a major pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages, the Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis became inseparably linked to the French monarchy as the burial site of kings and queens.

HISTORY OF THE FRENCH MONARCHY

The Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis owes its renown to the royal necropolis it houses. Limestone or marble recumbent statues, Renaissance mausoleums, Bourbon coffins, and cenotaphs… the history of the French monarchy unfolds through more than 70 royal tombs. These numerous sculptures, discovered in the ambulatory after passing through the nave, echo the sovereign France of the past. You will be enchanted by the beauty of its Gothic stained glass and moved by the deeply unique atmosphere that permeates the site.
